Our Approach to Couples Therapy
Our work with couples is grounded in Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), an attachment-based approach to relationship therapy. EFT looks beneath the surface of conflict to understand what happens when partners no longer feel emotionally secure with each other. The goal is not simply to teach communication techniques. It is to help you recognize the cycle between you, understand the softer emotions underneath anger or withdrawal, express needs more openly, respond with less defensiveness, repair after difficult conversations, rebuild trust and strengthen emotional connection. You can learn more about our approach on our Couples Therapy Toronto page.
Support for Affair Recovery and Broken Trust
Sometimes the distance between partners develops gradually. Other times, the relationship changes suddenly. An affair, hidden messages, secrecy or another breach of trust can leave one partner feeling shocked, angry and uncertain about what is real. The other partner may feel ashamed, defensive or desperate to repair the damage. Rebuilding trust requires emotional safety, accountability and honest conversations. Couples dealing specifically with betrayal can learn more about our Affair Recovery Therapy in Toronto.
What a satisfied couple wrote:
A couple’s relationship can change when both partners have space to speak honestly, understand the cycle they are caught in, and practise responding with more openness and care. Therapy is not about assigning blame; it is about creating a path back to emotional safety and connection.

Finding a good therapist is never as easy as.one would think, you have to feel comfortable with the person pretty quickly in order to commit. I had tried a few therapists previously, while I'm sure they were good for others they didn't work for me. With Allan however, we were able to dive into what I was trying improve and make progress very rapidly. While a therapist that will work well for you is personal, I can say that Allan was exactly what I needed and looking for.

Couples therapy is a collaborative process. Your therapist will help you slow down recurring conflict, understand the relationship cycle, and practise more secure ways of responding to one another. Sessions are tailored to your goals and usually include time for both partners to speak and reflect.
In the first session, each partner has space to describe what has been happening, what they hope will change, and what feels most difficult. Your therapist begins to understand the pattern between you and helps establish a direction for the work.
As therapy continues, you will learn to recognize the cycle that keeps you stuck, express underlying needs more clearly, and respond with less defensiveness and more emotional openness.
When conflict happens, therapy gives you practical support for slowing difficult conversations down, repairing after hurt, and creating greater emotional safety instead of repeating the same argument.
For intimacy and trust concerns, sessions can address emotional distance, intimacy, betrayal, secrecy, and the gradual rebuilding of connection through honesty, accountability, and care.
Your therapist’s role is to remain curious, balanced, and compassionate toward both partners. The goal is not to assign blame, but to help you understand what is happening and make meaningful changes together.
Progress looks different for every couple. Some partners come for focused support during a transition, while others want deeper, longer-term change. We will review your goals and adjust the pace and focus of therapy as your relationship develops.
