Signs Your Relationship Could Use Support
- Small disagreements turn into big arguments, and neither of you feels heard
- When one of you raises a concern, the other becomes defensive or withdraws
- Long work hours, travel and the children’s schedules leave almost no time for the two of you
- Your relationship runs smoothly on paper but feels empty of warmth
- Certain subjects—finances, intimacy, extended family, parenting—are now off limits
- You go to bed angry more often than you make up
- Affection and sexual closeness have become rare or feel like an obligation
- You confide in friends, colleagues or no one at all, rather than in each other
- Trust has been shaken by an affair, a hidden account or a lie that came to light
- A major change—a new baby, an empty nest, retirement or a career move—has unsettled things
- You find yourselves keeping score instead of giving each other the benefit of the doubt
- Date nights, holidays and good intentions haven’t changed the underlying pattern
- You still care about each other and want to feel close, secure and on the same side
You don’t need to tick every box. If even a few of these describe life at home, couples therapy offers a private place to pause the pattern and look at it together. Start with a free consultation—a short, no-obligation conversation about what is happening and whether our approach suits you.
Couples Therapy Minutes From Forest Hill
Forest Hill is known for its quiet, leafy streets, the shops and cafés of the Village around Spadina and Lonsdale, and households where a great deal is going on at once. Senior careers, children’s school and activity schedules, extended family and a full social calendar can leave very little room for the two of you. Over time, partners who manage everything else well can find they have stopped really talking.
Our office sits just east of the neighbourhood on Eglinton Avenue West, so getting to a session is a short drive, bus ride or walk rather than a trip across the city. That closeness makes it far easier to protect a regular time for your relationship—and regular attendance is one of the things that helps couples therapy work.
Discreet, Flexible Couples Therapy for Forest Hill Partners
Privacy matters, especially in a close-knit community. Sessions are confidential and held in a calm, professional office outside the neighbourhood itself, where you can speak freely about conflict, emotional distance, intimacy or trust without worrying about who you might run into.
When your week is unpredictable—travel for work, a child home sick, a late meeting—sessions can move online. We see couples by secure video anywhere in Ontario, so the work keeps its momentum even when your schedule doesn’t cooperate.
Emotionally Focused Therapy: Our Way of Working
Every therapist on our couples team is trained in Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), one of the most thoroughly studied approaches to relationship distress. EFT is built on attachment science: the understanding that adults, like children, need to feel their most important person is reachable and responsive. When that sense of security wobbles, couples protest, criticize, go silent or pull away—and the more one does, the more the other reacts.
In EFT we map that loop with you so it becomes the shared problem instead of each other. From there, partners learn to voice the softer feelings that usually stay hidden, ask for closeness without blame, listen without armour, and recover more quickly when things go wrong. The aim is lasting emotional safety, not a list of rules for arguing politely. Our Couples Therapy Toronto page explains the approach in more depth.
When Trust Has Been Broken
Discovering an affair or a long-kept secret can feel like the ground giving way. The injured partner often swings between rage, numbness and a need to know every detail. The partner who caused the injury may want to move on fast, or may be so overwhelmed by remorse that they shut down. Both reactions are understandable, and both can make repair harder without guidance.
Therapy slows this down. We help the hurt be fully heard, support genuine accountability, and guide the difficult conversations that let trust be rebuilt step by step—or help you reach a clear decision about what comes next. Read more about this work on our Affair Recovery Therapy in Toronto page.
What Changes in Couples Therapy
Couples often tell us the turning point was not a technique but a moment: hearing their partner say something vulnerable and realizing the anger had been covering hurt all along. When each of you feels safe enough to be honest, and met with care when you are, arguments lose their grip and closeness returns. Nobody is cast as the problem—the pattern is.

Finding a good therapist is never as easy as.one would think, you have to feel comfortable with the person pretty quickly in order to commit. I had tried a few therapists previously, while I'm sure they were good for others they didn't work for me. With Allan however, we were able to dive into what I was trying improve and make progress very rapidly. While a therapist that will work well for you is personal, I can say that Allan was exactly what I needed and looking for.

Couples therapy is something you do together, with your therapist as a guide. The work involves slowing conflict down, understanding the cycle that has taken hold, and practising safer, more open ways of reaching for each other. What we focus on is set by your goals, and both partners have room to talk and to think.
The first session is a chance for each of you to tell the story from your side: what has been going wrong, what hurts the most, and what you hope will change. Your therapist listens for the pattern underneath and agrees a starting direction with you.
Over the following sessions, you begin to notice the cycle in real time, put words to the needs driving it, and respond to each other with more curiosity and less self-protection.
For the arguments that escalate quickly, you’ll learn how to pause, come back to each other after a rupture, and build enough safety that the same fight stops repeating.
Where closeness or trust has been damaged, therapy makes room to talk about emotional and sexual distance, secrecy or betrayal, and to rebuild connection gradually through openness, responsibility and care.
Throughout, your therapist stays even-handed and warm with both of you. No one is put on trial. The task is to understand what is going on between you and change it together.
There is no fixed timetable. Some couples want focused help with a specific decision or transition; others choose longer-term work to change deep-rooted patterns. We revisit your goals as we go and adapt the pace to what your relationship needs.
Couples therapy is one of several services we offer. You can also explore marriage counselling, affair recovery therapy, family therapy and individual therapy with New Insights Counselling.

Couples Therapy Forest Hill: Common Questions
Who can benefit from couples therapy in Forest Hill?
Partners at any stage—dating, engaged, married or long-term—who are dealing with repeated conflict, growing distance, intimacy concerns, communication problems or a breach of trust. Many couples come well before things reach a crisis, and that is often when therapy is most effective.
Do we both have to attend?
Ideally, yes—couples therapy is designed for both partners to be in the room. If your partner is unsure, book a free consultation on your own first and we can talk through your situation and the options available.
What is the first session like?
You will each describe what has been happening, what is most painful and what you would like to be different. Your therapist starts to identify the pattern between you and agrees an initial focus for the work.
How long does each session last?
Plan for about 90 minutes for the first couples session and generally 75 minutes for sessions after that. How frequently you come is decided together, based on your goals and needs.
Can couples therapy help us recover from an affair?
Yes. Therapy gives both partners a structured and safe setting to talk honestly about what happened, for responsibility to be taken, and for emotional safety to be rebuilt. It also helps you decide, with clarity, how you want to move forward.
